Updated Sunscreen + self-tanning Picks
Glowing skin starts with protection. I’ve tested a lot over the years, and these are the ones that made the cut. From sheer SPFs to mess-free scalp sprays and glow-boosting self-tanners, this guide has everything you need to feel sun-kissed, without the sun damage.
SPF For The Body
These are the body sunscreens I keep on repeat: easy to apply, family-friendly, and actually enjoyable to use. From the hydrating glow of Kopari’s body mist to the dermatologist-approved (and our pediatrician recommended) Blue Lizard sunscreen and the game-changing Solar Buddies applicator for little ones, this lineup makes reapplying way less of a chore. I love traveling with this Vacation Chardonnay Oil, especially since it is carry-on friendly. No greasy residue, no chalky cast… just lightweight, water-resistant protection that keeps up with sunny days.
For Your Face + Hair
Your face and scalp need just as much protection, and these products make it feel like a treat, not a chore. Think: tinted SPF moisturizers from DRMTLGY and EltaMD (also available in sheer) that can double as lightweight makeup, a scalp mist from Coola that won’t wreck your hair, and lip balms that actually hydrate while they shield. This three-pack is my favorite, so I can keep one in my purse, one near our pool, etc. The best part? Most of these layer seamlessly with makeup, so you’ll actually want to wear them every day.
Let’s Talk Self-Tanner
One of the most frequently asked questions I’ve been receiving lately is about my skincare and tanning routine. To be honest, I don’t wear a ton of self-tanner in the summer; I tan pretty easily (thank you, Italian genes). However, I’ve learned a great deal over the years about achieving a believable glow without the sun, and I’ve discovered some products I truly trust.
First things first: prep is everything. I always exfoliate beforehand so the self-tanner applies evenly. This exfoliating mitt is my go-to for removing dead skin. Once I’m dry, I apply a lightweight moisturizer to my hands, elbows, and feet (the areas that tend to absorb more product). After tanning/rinsing off, I keep that same moisturizer in rotation to help lock in hydration. Self-tanner can be drying, so keeping your skin soft and nourished makes all the difference.
When it comes to sunless tanning, I’m team foaming mousse. Once you get the hang of it, it’s quick, easy, and delivers fast, even results. I swear by Loving Tan, Coco & Eve, or Luna Bronze; their formulas are clean, safe, give the perfect color, and smell good. St. Tropez is another tried-and-true favorite I’ve used for years.
If you’re using a mousse, a tanning mitt is essential; it helps distribute the product evenly and keeps your hands from turning orange. I apply in circular motions, starting from my legs and working my way up. I use it sparingly on areas like hands, elbows, knees, and feet, usually after I’ve finished the rest of my body, and there’s less product left on the mitt.
If you prefer a more gradual approach, a few great options:
Tanning drops: Mix a few into your regular moisturizer to customize the level of glow
Gradual tanning lotion: Easy to apply like a body lotion, with color that builds over a few days
Tanning mist: Great for touch-ups or buildable color, and easy to control
Body Perfector: If you’re looking for a quick way to even out your skin tone, think of this as foundation for your body. It blurs imperfections, gives a smooth, natural-looking finish, and once it dries, it won’t transfer. Just keep in mind, it’s not a self-tanner and will wash off with soap and water. I’ve worn it to the pool/beach and it held up all day long with no issues.
It may take a little trial and error to find your groove, but once you do, it’s totally worth it for that healthy glow, no sun damage required.
